Latest Conference: The effects of YHK & DTS on the prevention of dementia

In recent years, there is a higher awareness of health maintenance and diseases prevention. With the expansion of the health market sector, there are also more products for consumers to choose from, but not all products are effective or safe, with the lack of regulations in health supplements, it is easy to get the wrong product with little effects or in some cases even harmful.

Verification of effect on dementia of preventive medicine that contains “Panax Notoginseng and Eucommia."

Introduction:

In 2012 Japan, around 1in 7 people aged 65 or above has dementia, an estimated 4.62 million people, with a prevalence rate of 15.0%.

A prediction of 1 in 5 people will have dementia by 2025, around 7 million people in Japan.

Background:

“Yi Gan San" is a Chinese herbal product which is said to be good for the brain, but “Yi Gan San" is originally a remedy for the liver. In the Chinese Medical Theory it is said that the brain and liver are closely related, and the Chinese classical literature “Biàn Zhèng Qí Wén” has also stated that “When the brain has insufficient energy, the treatment is from the liver”.

Based on this theory, our research set to find out if there is another liver supplement or liver therapy that might have effects on the brain other than “Yi Gan San”.
 

Research:

Our research was based on two Kampo therapy which contains “Panax Notoginseng and Eucommia” as the main ingredient; YHK Liver Therapy and DTS Health Supplement. Both herbal formulae have been proven in cells, animals and human testing to have the positive effect in improving liver and kidney health.

Research shows that both products have effects in promoting the growth of neuronal cells (PC12):

“Single application of DTS or YHK extracts did not directly induce neurite outgrowth under treatment for 48 hours, but slightly increase the expression of neurofilaments in PC12 cells. Furthermore, the co-treatment of DTS or YHK extract with NGF (at non-effective concentration) could induce neurite outgrowth and enhance neurofilament expression.”

Conclusion:

YHK and DTS are proven in liver and kidney protection, and research shows that these Kampo therapies have a positive effect on the differentiation and growth of neuronal cells, and it could possibility has to impact on the prevention and treatment of dementia. Our results not only provide the basis for further in vivo and clinical research in dementia but also prompt further studies aimed at the understanding of the pharmacology of YHK and DTS in more details.
