Q:

Alzheimer’s is a liver disease?!

Alzheimer’s is a liver disease?!
A:

In 2010, some 4.7 million people aged 65 years or older lived with Alzheimer's disease in the US.

Alzheimer’s is a common brain disease that causes progressive brain cell death that happens over a course of time. It will also cause a shrink in brain size as the tissue has progressively fewer nerve cells and connections. Alzheimer’s is thought to be caused by Protein Plaques building up in the brain cells, these Plaques are found between the dying cells in the brain from the build-up of a protein called beta-amyloid. [1]

Alzheimer’s is not a brain disease?

For years, researchers and experts have been trying to find where this protein comes from, as this is a defect in the brain, people naturally assume that Alzheimer’s is a type of brain disease. But in recent years, data and research suggest that the protein that forms plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease may have originated in the liver.

Researchers found that targeting the liver's production of this protein, called beta amyloid, may be a new way to treat Alzheimer’s. In fact, they tested their hypothesis and suggested that a considerable amount of beta amyloid protein found in the brain is actually produced elsewhere.

Surprise, Surprise!

Researchers were  surprised by their findings, "Everybody has assumed that it’s the amyloid that originates in the brain that causes the brain disorder," said study researcher Greg Sutcliffe, of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. "Had I not seen the data, I would have scoffed at the idea that it might come from someplace else," he added. [2]

Chinese Medicine proposed this theory 400 years ago

Chinese Medics and Traditional Medicine have a different theory to the modern Western treatments. Chinese medicine covers a wide range of disease prevention and treatment, it is especially impressive in treating chronic illnesses, and is still widely used in Asian countries and parts of Europe and America.

A classic Chinese Medicine publication, Biàn Zhèng Lù (辨證錄), written back in 1687, mentioned that brain problem is closely related to liver health and its balance. According to it, ‘Our brain is linked with the liver. An imbalance and lack of power in the brain is due to the lack of power in the liver, these two parts share energy and therefore should been seen as one. In order to treat this lack of brain power, liver energy must be increased.’

YHK and DTS to protect brain function?

YHK and DTS have both been proven to have great effect in liver function enhancement and protection. Now, you might wonder if YHK and DTS can help to treat or prevent Alzheimer’s too. Research studies of both YHK and DTS in the subject of brain cell protection have already begun. We are seeing positive effects of YHK and DTS in helping the growth of brain cells.

A research project conducted by a university in Hong Kong found that ‘The co-treatment of DTS or YHK extract with NGF (at non-effective concentration) could induce neurite outgrowth and enhance neurofilament expression.’ [3]

ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase / SGPT) is an enzyme that is mainly found in liver cells. The level of ALT in our bloodstream is the primary indicator of liver health.   What does high ALT indicate? ALT enzymes are normally contained within liver cells when the liver is healthy, but when the liver cells are injured or damaged by whatever means, ALT enzymes are released into the bloodstream, causing levels to go up.
